A Word from the director

Ideal Africa Initiative (IAI) is committed to scaling down carbon emission through implementation of sustainable agricultural practices. We work with communities in Kajiado and Turkana who have been affected by climate change to help them adapt to more sustainable agricultural practices. In addition to these, we are members of the generation restoration; we believe that we can work with school going children at an early age and encourage them through experiential learning to become climate change ambassadors through adoption of sustainable agriculture. We are passionate about women as they are often left with the burden of heavy lifting in times of crisis and in the wake of climate change. We work with women to enable them to become resilient by providing hands-on experience on sustainable agriculture, and adoption of clean energy options for them in their households. Our programs on clean energy target girls and youthful women who are primarily the onces who have to fetch firewood and prepare meals in the communities, by helping communities establish energy efficient stoves it helps reduce the exposure to GBV for the youthful women and girls and at the same time reduces their chances of being exposed to energy poverty (reduced time in school, increased risks to respiratory diseases.)

Key achievements (past 8 months)
• Trained 33 women who are household heads in Mile 46 Kajiado West on climate smart agriculture. (Distributed vegetables seeds, demonstrated nursery bed preparation, demonstrated transplanting, advocated and implemented alternatives to dealing with pests and diseases using organic methods that are climate friendly, helped the women dispose extra vegetables at the nearby market)
• Trained 120 women from Enashipai cooperative on climate smart agriculture and distributed seeds to them.
• Helped male maasai members who lost their livestock as because ofe 2021/2022 drought learn and practice organic farming of maize, vegetables and pumpkins, and now they are selling maize harvests.
• Established kitchen gardens in Elangata Waus primary school that are currently providing organic vegetables to the school children weekly.
• Refurbished Moipei primary school kitchen gardens and helped the school community understand what they missed out during the installation process.
• Established a poultry farm within Moipei Primary school with a potential of providing 25% of eggs to the school community while selling excess eggs to cater for the feeds and vaccines.
• Trained a group of forty women from Olgulului in Amboseli on climate smart agriculture in collaboration with the Malkia initiative, we demonstrated how to plant in sacks a technique that requires little water to grow.
• Conduct an assessment in Kajiado West on the effects of climate change and how communities are building adaptation mechanisms.
• Trained 20 women in Mile 46 Kajiado women on how climate change intersects with gender based violence and pathways to mitigation. The women requested for further training with their spouses to have the same understanding and be able to work together to mitigate these changes.
• During our Procurement process at Elengatta Waus and Moipei we were able to source materials and equipment from local suppliers thus engaging the wider community in the project.

IAI has brought together independent non-partisan professionals, both nationals and from within the East Africa region, with a wealth of and extensive experience, both hands-on and technically on various fields to support the three key main thematic areas: Climate smart Agriculture, Education, and clean Energy.

As professionals on different humanitarian sectors, IAI founders felt that there is an urgent need for interventions that would empower farmers affected by climate change with the necessary knowledge to implement climate smart agriculture, ensure that marginalized communities affected by climate change have access to clean and renewable energy and work with school going children to deliver sustainable food production solutions to meet their dietary requirements as they go about with school. We act as a bridge between community members and the change they wish to see in their society by strengthening capacities of community members and catalyze partnerships that catalyze food, energy, and education systems, which enable sustainable and equitable lives for all.

We have a great working relationship with the Ministry of Agriculture and Education both at
the county and national level, we work together collaboratively by exchanging ideas,
designing data collection tool, and supportive monitoring.

Organization’s strategic priorities:
  • To enhance adaptive capacity and resilience of farmers, pastoralists, and fisher-folk to the adverse impacts of climate change.
  • To develop mechanisms that minimize greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural production systems.
  • To improve coordination and collaboration among institutions and stakeholders in climate smart agriculture.
  • To address cross-cutting issues that adversely impact or enhance CSA. The implementation of this Strategy will be guided by the following principles:
    a) Multi-dimensional, (short, medium and long term): taking into account global to local implications at all term time scales.
    b) Country and context specific: considering the holistic aspects of development.
    c) Sustainable agriculture: will endeavor to nurture healthy ecosystems and support sustainable management of land, water and natural resources while ensuring increased productivity for national food security. This will entail improving efficiency in the use of resources; direct action to conserve, protect and enhance natural resources; and resilience of people, communities and ecosystems, especially to climate change and market volatility. This is in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, as adopted on 25th September 2015.
